How to choose the right size valve? 1. The size of the earthquake gas valve has to match the size of your main gas pipe that enters your home - normally the larger pipe in size. Before ordering a gas shutoff valve, you must measure the main gas line that enters your home. 2. Wrap a string around the main gas line that enters your home. Mark the exact point where the string overlaps the end. 3. Remove the string from your gas line and measure the distance from the edge of the string to the mark you have made. 4. In the chart below in the column Pipe Circumference. The corresponding number in the column Pipe Size is your gas line pipe size. 5. This measurement will be within 1/8" of one of the figures noted on the string, or in the chart below in the column Pipe Circumference. The corresponding number in the column Pipe Size is your gas line pipe size. Refer to this measurement when ordering a gas shutoff valve.
